LIVING ON THE EDGE: Train the Edges of the Strike Zone with Shadow Zone™

In baseball, a pitch on the edge can change an at-bat. A pitcher who can consistently locate the ball near the boundaries of the strike zone can make hitters work for every swing. That’s where SHADOW ZONE™ comes in.

Shadow Zone™ helps pitchers focus on the “border band,” the area that straddles the edges of the official strike zone. Picture a space roughly one baseball-width inside and one baseball-width outside a boundary. This is where pitchers learn to LIVE ON the EDGE: close enough to challenge the hitter, with control over where each pitch goes.

What Is the Shadow Zone?

The Shadow Zone is a visual training target around the edges of the strike zone. It helps pitchers practice locating pitches near the corners, at the top and bottom of the zone, and around the borderline areas that make the at-bat difficult for a hitter.

The strike zone varies with each batter, so pitchers need more than a general idea of where the zone is. They need to develop a feel for location and the ability to repeat it. SHADOW ZONE™ provides a clear visual aid to HONE SPATIAL FOCUS during pitching practice.

Own the Black and Control the 50-50 Area

The edges of the zone are often called “the black.” These borderline pitches can force hitters to decide whether to swing, hold, or protect the plate. With focused practice, pitchers can work on painting the black, painting the corners, and hitting the Top and Bottom of the Zone.

Shadow Zone™ helps pitchers work on:

  • Owning the black
  • Controlling the 50-50 area
  • Framing the corners
  • Painting the top and bottom of the zone
  • Developing the Pitcher’s Pitch

The goal is not to throw strikes. It is to make the hitter hit your pitch.

Train with a Clear Visual Target

Pitching Success depends on more than arm strength. Pitchers also need to see the target, understand the location, and repeat the movement with control. Shadow Zone™ gives pitchers a visual reference for practicing those locations and provides instant feedback on where the pitch travels in relation to the target.

That feedback helps turn vague commands like “hit the corner” into a focused practice goal. Pitchers can work on the “Ghost Zone,” the “Str-Ball Zone,” or what some players call “the river”: the narrow border area where a well-located pitch can challenge a hitter.

Make Every Pitching Session More IMPACTFUL

A productive bullpen session starts with a purpose. Instead of throwing pitch after pitch without a specific target, pitchers can use Shadow Zone™ to focus on one part of the strike zone at a time.

Practice painting the corners. Work the upper and lower edges. Challenge yourself to repeat the same location. Build confidence in the areas where small differences in placement can affect the hitter’s decision.

Train your strike zone with purpose. Shadow Zone™ gives pitchers a clear visual target for focused, repeatable throwing work, helping them sharpen location and practice with intention.

LIVING on the EDGE starts with learning to control it.

Note: The official strike zone is determined for each batter during the game. Shadow Zone™ is a visual training aid for pitching practice.
